Carly Richardson followed up a shutout of Western Monday night with a no-hit performance Wednesday night in Cherokee. The Tigers blanked the Braves, 13-0, in four innings to improve to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Richardson struck out three, walked one and hit two batters during the four-inning no hitter. Spencer collected 11 hits against the winless Braves (0-15), including two hits and two runs a piece from Karis Rhode, Piper Swanson and Hailey Huckfelt. Rhode and Swanson each drove in two runs, and Huckfelt drove in three. Alexa Allen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.
After a scoreless first inning, Spencer put up two runs in the second, three in third and blew the game open in the fourth with eight runs.
"From the very start of the game, we came out were playing good, hard Tiger softball," Spencer coach Greg Jones said. "Carly pitched well, we played solid defense behind her, and we never let them get any momentum. We're playing with a lot of confidence right now, and that's important with this team. And each night we get a little more confidence."
Spencer beat Cherokee 14-2 on May 23 in Spencer. The Tigers will face No.1-ranked (2A) North Union (18-0) tonight (Thursday) in Swea City. The varsity will play first, starting at 6:30 p.m.
