An accident at the intersection of U.S. Highways 71 and 18 shortly after 5 p.m. Monday resulted in the death of a 63-year-old Sanborn woman and sent an Altoona man to the hospital with injuries.

The collision, which occurred in a construction zone stretching from the northern edge of Spencer to Milford, involved a Buick Park Avenue, being operated by Leola Vanravenswaay, of Sanborn, and a large truck hauling a trailer with a small implement, driven by Christopher Beyerhelm, of Waukee.

Vanravenswaay was traveling eastbound on Highway 18 and entered the intersection of Highway 71, into the path of the southbound truck. The impact appeared to have severely damaged the front driver's side of the Buick. When Clay County Sheriff's deputies and emergency responders from the Spencer and Fostoria fire departments, and Spencer paramedics arrived on scene, Vanravenswaay was trapped unresponsive in her vehicle. She was extricated from her vehicle and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Beyerhelm was treated for minor cuts and bruises at the scene. A passenger in the Beyerhelm truck, Kent Allen from Altoona, was transported to the Spencer Hospital by Spencer Ambulance. He was treated and released a few hours later.

Offering assistance at the scene were officers with the Spencer Police Department and Iowa State Patrol.
