"You gotta hit 'em where they ain't" is an old baseball adage Spencer could have used during a 5-2 loss to Western Christian Monday evening in Hull. The Tigers picked up four hits on the night and couldn't find the holes in the Western defense.
"We were hitting the ball hard, it was just right at them," Spencer coach Brian Dirkx said. "They were finding the holes and we couldn't."
Western built a 3-0 lead after three innings and got the benefit of a liberal interpretation of fair territory by an umpire to add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Spencer would get a run in the fifth and sixth but couldn't get back in the game.
Tayler Tatman took the loss after scattering nine singles over six innings, giving up five earned runs, while striking out eight and walking none. Tatman also went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Michael Klemme and Jordon Plueger also picked up singles for the Tigers, who have been limited offensively over the past two conference games. Collin Faber picked up the complete game win for Western. He struck out four.
Spencer is 6-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Lakes. They will play at Cherokee on Wednesday and at Lawton-Bronson on Friday.
