Accident results in serious injuries

Thursday, June 7, 2012

An 87-year-old LeMars man suffered incapacitating injuries when his vehicle collided into another vehicle on U.S. Highway 71 north of Spencer at 12:15 Tuesday.

John Murphy, and passenger John Cain, were traveling northbound in a 2005 Chevrolet Impala and failed to see a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse driven by William Greig, 50, of Estherville, slowing to turn into Spencer Livestock.

Murphy applied the brakes and took evasive actions, but could not avoid striking the rear of Grieg's vehicle.

Murphy was transported to Spencer Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Greig suffered minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital and Cain was uninjured.

Murphy's vehicle was totaled, with damages estimated at $8,000, while the damage to Greig's vehicle was estimated at about $5,000.

Due to road construction, traffic was already restricted to two lanes. Traffic was backed up, though not completely stopped, in both lanes while emergency personnel tended to the scene.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Spencer Hospital Ambulance, Spencer Fire Department and Fostoria Fire and Rescue.
