"I was pleased with the effort. The girls left everything they had on the field," Spencer coach Tom Van Tassell said. "We're disappointed but we can still hold our heads high."
Spencer got on the board first after holding off East's initial attack. Maddie Gould put a direct kick in front of the net that Ashley Williamson would put home for a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the match.
East answered with six minutes left in the half off a direct kick of its own with a header to square the match, 1-1, where they would break for halftime.
Spencer continued to defend against East's attack but would surrender the go-ahead goal by Amy Grause in the 64th minute on the Black Raiders' 12th corner kick of the day. Grause would add another goal moments later to seal a trip to the Class 2A state tournament in Des Moines, which begins Thursday.
"Our back four had periods of extended pressure throughout the match," Van Tassell said of East's relentless attack. "They really battled and played well."
Eight seniors played their last game for Spencer, a group which has won more games for the purple and gold then any other. Ashley Williamson, who scored her 20th goal of the season on Monday, will play soccer and basketball at Northwestern College next year. Other graduated seniors are Whitney Armstrong, Sierra Beschorner, Julia Winterboer, Laura Seeley, Maddie Conley, Maddie Gould, Brianne Hassman and Emily Elliott.
"Great thanks to the seniors. They've been a great group we'll miss. The fans have also been great all year again," Van Tassell added.
