Byers and Norris would finish with the two fastest times in 3A in the 1,600 and all five runners pictured (also Heelan's Alec Pavone and MOC-Floyd Valley's Kyle Anderson) would qualify for state. Sixteen of the 24 State Meet qualifiers were set Thursday night, which meant there was still eight spots available throughout the state -- may the best times get in.

Spencer was running in a talented 3A district, featuring Bishop Heelan, Spirit Lake Park, MOC-Floyd Valley and Algona, so first- and second-place finishes were coming at a premium. The Tiger boys were guaranteed just two spots on Thursday and when the times were gathered statewide Friday morning, Spencer's held up.

Despite some third-, fourth- and even fifth-place district finishes, the Spencer boys qualified seven more events based on time, or distance for field events. The boys team will send five relays to Des Moines: the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, distance medley and shuttle hurdle. Only the 4x800 finished in the top-2 at districts.

Jack Randall, Phil Huisenga and Austin Hansen each qualified in three relays. Ryan Bauermeister, Max Rasmussen, Tanner Logan, Cody Mowery and Blake Altenhofen each qualified in two events. Austin Lauck earned a trip in the long jump.

The girls team doubled its number of events headed to Des Moines from four to eight, as it qualified three relays based on time (4x100, 4x400, sprint medley) and Cierra Guerrero in the 3,000.

Juniors Taylor Glover and Ali Meister each qualified in four events for the Lady Tigers, the most events you can participate in. Kim Shabino, Kari and Kelli Kramer, Madi Rost and Kelsey Rolfes each were on two qualifying teams.

Sioux Central and Okoboji will send numerous hurdlers down to state, led by Ethan Lindquist of Sioux Central and Zach Jones of Okoboji. Jones qualified in four events, including the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and shuttle hurdle relay. Lindquist made it in the 110 hurdles, shuttle hurdle and open 800. Dalton Syverson of Okoboji also will compete in four events.

Clay Central-Everly's boys team will be well-represented by its two seniors, Jared Schoelerman and Brent Trierweiler. Schoelerman turned in the top time in the 110 hurdles in 1A (14.97) and also qualified in the high jump and 400 hurdles. Trierweiler will compete in the shot put, discus and 100-meter dash.

Spirit Lake Park will feature 10 boys events at state, led by senior Keith Byers, who clocked 3A's fastest times in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters. Will Norris trails Byers in both events, and both are on the 4x800 relay. The girls side saw eight events qualify, led by Taylor Sieperda in three events.

The state meet will be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from Thursday, May 17 to Saturday, May 19.

Spencer's Ali Meister hands the baton to Taylor Glover during the sprint medley Thursday afternoon in Spirit Lake. Spencer finished third in the event, yet still qualified with the ninth-fastest time in 3A. Glover and Meister each qualified in four events for the Lady Tigers.
