The Spencer and Spirit Lake Park girls teams have battled each other all year, and have traded off team wins throughout the season, but at Thursday's Lakes Conference meet in Storm Lake, it was all Tigers.

The girls team won the Lakes title by scoring 150 team points to runner-up SLP's 122.5. Western Christian was third with 101. The Lady Tigers won four events and finished second in seven others. The wins came in the distance medley, sprint medley, shuttle hurdle relay and Ali Meister in the 100 hurdles.

"It was an impressive win for us. The kids ran lights out," Spencer girls coach Al Pierce said. "One of the keys was our distance medley, I'm so happy for that group. They really set the tone for us early and were a catalyst for the rest of the meet. They started it off and then we caught fire."

Spencer senior Daly Tighe anchored the distance medley after opening the meet with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run in her best time of the season (11:18.12).

The Lady Tigers ran season-best relay times in the sprint medley, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800. Taylor Glover bested the previous conference-meet record in the open 400 but finished second to last year's 2A state champion Brooke Wolterstorff of Western by four-tenths of a second.

Other season-best times included Kim Shabino in the 200 meters (26.67, 2nd), and Cierra Guerrero in the 1,500 (5:08.88, 2nd).

Spencer's Austin Lauck pushes towards the finish line during the 100-meter dash at the Lakes Conference meet on Thursday in Storm Lake. Lauck would finish fourth in the event, and also take third in the long jump.

Spencer will have one final regular season meet Monday, May 7 in Emmetsburg before the 3A State Qualifying Meet in Spirit Lake on Thursday, May 10.

BOYS TAKE SECOND

The Spencer boys turned in a second-place performance behind Spirit Lake Park and won two relays (4x800 and 1,600 sprint medley), both anchored by Jack Randall. The Tigers took second and third in the long jump with Tanner Logan and Austin Lauck both leaping over 19-10.

The shuttle hurdle and 4x200 relays took second place. Ryan Bauermeister finished third to Spirit Lake Park's Keith Byers and Will Norris in the 3,200 and 1,600 meter runs.

"I was very pleased with our kids. They accomplished their goal of finishing in the top-2 in the conference," Spencer boys coach Kurt Bauermeister said. "They ran with a lot of heart and determination. We gave it our best shot, with 8-10 personal bests, but we knew it would have been tough to beat Spirit Lake."

The boys will host the Spencer Relays on Monday, May 7, at Dale Norton Field before competing at the State Qualifying Meet in Spirit Lake on May 10.
