Homer Eaton Fairchild, 90, passed away on April 19, 2012, at home at Spring Arbor in Leesburg, Va. Prior to moving to Spring Arbor in 2011, he lived at Leisure World of Virginia in Lansdowne since 1998. Dr. Fairchild was born on Oct. 1, 1921 in Sioux Rapids to the late Herbert Elmer and Faye Eaton Fairchild. He was one of four sons growing up on the family farm and loved playing baseball. He was a graduate of Linn Grove High School. He received his B.S. in Agriculture from South Dakota State College, in 1944. He was awarded a PhD in Entomology at Kansas State College in 1953.
He loved his career. He was a research entomologist with DuPont deNemours Company in Wilmington, Delaware from 1952-1960. Homer served as Technical Service Manager and Division Specialist for Geigy Chemical Corporation in Ardsley, N.Y. 1960-1966. He followed this opportunity to join Union Carbide Corporation in New York, NY from 1966-71. He was worldwide market manager of Sevin Insecticide.
After the Environmental Protection Agency was created, he joined the office of the Deputy Assistant Administrator, Pesticide Programs in Washington, DC. He served in several capacities from 1971-1976. In 1976 Homer moved to the USDA's Plant Protection and Quarantine, Hyattsville, Md.
After retiring in 1988, he lived in Advance, N.C. where he was active in his church and the Alzheimer's Assn. While living in Lansdowne, he was active in National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and St. David's Episcopal Church.
Homer is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Fairchild, of Leesburg; daughter, Ann Starzenski (Edward) of Leesburg; sons: James Fairchild of Missoula, Mont., William Fairchild of Chatsworth, Calif.; grandchildren: Laura and David of Leesburg; brothers: Mahlon Fairchild of Maryville, Mo. and Bernard Fairchild of Spencer; and a number of other relatives.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Sara Starzenski; and brother, Stanley Fairchild.
The family thanks all of those who cared for Homer during his illness.
Services will be held on April 26, at St. David's Episcopal Church in Ashburn, Va. with visitation for family and friends at 10 a.m. and funeral services to follow at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Leesburg.
