I love St. Patrick's Day. Maybe it's because I like to think I'm part Irish (my left earlobe, if I'm not mistaken). Maybe it's because that's the day I was supposed to be born (I was Patty until Kate, a good gender-ambiguous name). Maybe it's none of these. But for some reason I like this holiday.
My mom asked me this question a few years back: "If you could be a color, what color would you be, and why?" Not, "What's your favorite color," but "What color would you be?" Now before anyone gets too smart-alecky and answers "white" or "black" for the obvious reasons, think about it a moment.
What did I answer? Green.
If I could be a color, I would be the color green. Green has many moods: spunky, mellow, comforting, ambitious. It's unpredictable. Aside from the illness-detecting variety, green is a fun color.
Yes, I love Christmas and Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day and all of the others. But I think this one's my favorite. Though I've yet to try green beer, and I learned firsthand to drink the Shamrock Shake after the workout, I get excited for the little holiday in the corner wearing the "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" T-shirt.
So Happy St. Patrick's Day! Whether you're up in Emmetsburg, at the SCT Pub-crawl, sampling the green ketchup at Burger King or sitting at home with your "Celtic Thunder/Celtic Woman" DVD (or, if you prefer, "Boondock Saints"), may a little luck and charm come your way.
