SHS speech students advance

Spencer High School sent 24 performers to the State Individual Speech Contest on Saturday in Sibley. Those students brought home 18 division "I" ratings and 11 division "II" ratings through 29 events, and four students are advancing to the All-State Individual Speech Contest.

Spencer High School individual speech students accounted for 18 division "I" ratings, including four All-State berths, at the State Individual Speech Contest on Saturday in Sibley.

At All-State, Senior Brianne Hassman will perform storytelling; juniors Kevin Grimes II and Daly Tighe will perform prose and solo musical theatre, respectively; and freshman Lindsey Hassman will perform prose.

Brianne Hassman also earned a division "I" rating in acting.

Other students earning division "I" ratings include:

Seniors: Cassondra Thompson for expository speaking and acting and Daniel Moore for improvisation.

Juniors: Amber Ellis for after dinner speaking and Cayla Cunningham and Rachel Dole for literary program.

Sophomores: Hannah Zinn for storytelling and Kaitlyn Moore for solo musical theatre.

Freshmen: Hannah Zulk and Lauren Sather for radio news, Lauren Sather for prose, Morgan Merrill for solo musical theatre and Ryan Crew for prose.

The following individuals earned division "II" ratings:

Seniors: Bryan Lovan for radio news and improvisation and Kyle Winterboer for prose.

Juniors: Kelsey Morisch for after dinner speaking, Maggie Doyle for poetry and Wil Boyens for radio news.

Sophomores: Beth Halverson for after dinner speaking and Piper Swanson for literary program.

Freshmen: Hannah Zulk for literary program, Morgan Merrill for storytelling and Nikki Johnson for poetry.
