Bethany uses "Trivia Night" to fund education

Saturday, February 25, 2012

Bethany Lutheran Church hosted its first trivia night event on Feb.19, in an attempt to raise money for local youth scholarships.

The competition, consisting of nine teams, began with a tailgate. In the future, organizers are talking about conducting a potluck to kick off the night.

"We have a new focus towards the youth," Becky Winterboer said. Winterboer had seen the trivia night at another church and saw an opportunity for Bethany, both to witness but also just to support the young people of Spencer.

"In addition to just receiving a financial investment, we want them to feel supported by the church," Bethany Lutheran Rev. Len Halvorson said.

The trivia nights will soon become their primary source for the church's scholarship fundraising. This year the two winning teams earned college-themed prizes. As Bethany's scholarship committee continues to organize these events, they hope to host a trivia night at least four times a year.

Currently, they have enough $500 scholarships for each of the 11 graduating students of Bethany. They're hoping to raise two more for the greater community.

In order to receive the scholarships, graduates have to apply.

"Even the Bethany kids will have to apply," Halvorson said.
