Funeral services for Mr. Ronald Darnell, 54, of Spencer, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rev. Chuck Kellogg will officiate the service.

Burial will be at a later date.

Military services will be conducted by American Legion Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 and VFW Clay County Post No. 3159.

Mr. Darnell passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Spencer Hospital.

Ronald Joseph Darnell, the son of Dale and Patricia (Hickmon) Darnell, was born on March 1, 1957, in Spencer, Ia. He was raised and received his early education in Spencer graduating from Spencer High School in 1975. Following graduation, he entered into the military on June 10, 1974, serving in the United States Navy. Ron served his country for 20 years, being honorably discharged on June 30, 1995.

After his discharge, Ron worked as a service technician at Atlas Elevator in San Diego for about 10 years. In 2004, he moved to Spencer where he worked various temporary jobs around the Spencer area, most recently at The Daily Reporter. He was active in the V.F.W., obtaining All State Commander four times and most recently serving as the District 8 Commander of V.F.W. Post No. 3159. Ron enjoyed cooking, bowling, playing golf and having his morning coffee with his friends at Sister's Café. Ron also was politically involved in the area, with the Republican Party, but most of all he loved to spend time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, Dale (Kay) of Spencer, Ia.; his sister, Fawn Mefferd (Steve) of Mitchellville, Ia.; his three brothers: Marvin Darnell (Donna) of Hamilton, Mont., Jerry Darnell (Betty) of Sheldon, Ia. and Jeff Darnell (Melanie) of Livingston, Texas; his adoptive daughters: Amanda Dewey of Concow, Calif. and Tiffany Dewey and special friend, Joe Morgan, of Spencer; special friend, Linda Smith of Spencer, Ia.; other relatives and friends.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
