Man arrested in Spencer for identity theft

Clay County Sheriff's deputies arrested Pablo Lorenzo Barrera, 22, of Worthington, Minn., at 7:29 a.m. Monday, in connection with charges associated with identity theft which originated in January 2010.

Barrera was arrested at 11th Avenue West and McNaughton Way, and charged with felony identity theft, as well as a misdemeanor charge of tampering with records, stemming from a complaint filed by an individual in Harlingen, Texas two years ago.

The complainant alleged an individual was working in Iowa with his personal information. He was notified through the IRS through the results of an audit, and wanted law enforcement to look into the allegations as he had never been to Spencer.

Following the investigation, Barrera was arrested for using the identity of another for benefit. It was alleged that Barrera has been using the identity for two years.

He was processed, booked and being held in the Clay County Jail awaiting an appearance before the magistrate.
