Helen M. Stroud, 82, of Spencer, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at Longhouse Nursing Home in Spencer. She was born on July 10, 1929, in Farmington, Minn., to Lee and Mae (Kingston) Hammond.
Helen graduated from Cresco High School in 1947. After working one year in Minneapolis, she attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, with BA Degree in English, Speech and Spanish.
Helen was united in marriage to Roy Stroud on Dec. 17, 1950, in Cedar Falls, Ia. She taught English in Janesville, Ia., until moving to Estherville, in 1952, when Roy joined Bob and Lee Hammond as a partner in Hammond Oil Company. Helen was a member of P.E.O. and the St. Alban's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed golfing, quilting, skiing and playing bridge.
Helen is survived by her husband, Roy Stroud, of Spencer; three children: Steve Stroud, and his wife, Kim, of Des Moines, Susan Stroud of Hastings, Neb., and Julie Kassel, and her husband, Paul, of Spencer; five grandchildren: Kenzie (Mark) Piper, Scott (Amber) Stroud, Cale, Brant and Jill Kassel; one great-granddaughter, Agatha Piper; and a brother, Robert Hammond, and his wife, Helene, of Rochester, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Helen's name.
