Services for Joel O. Eaton will be held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 13, 2012, at United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Rev. Roger Maize will officiate the service.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven.

Inurnment will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven.

Military graveside rites will be performed by American Legion Post No. 33, of Ruthven.

Joel Orlo Eaton, son of Howard O. and Edith M. (Jacobsen) Eaton, was born Jan. 4, 1935, near Ruthven, Ia. He received his education in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven High School in 1953.

In 1957 Joel was inducted into the United States Army. After his father's death he was discharged to return home. He then returned to service in 1960 during the Berlin Crisis and was later honorably discharged due to medical reasons.

On Nov. 6, 1965, Joel was united in marriage to Charlene Wilcox at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven.

Joel owned and operated the Texaco Gas Station in Ruthven for several years and worked for other local gas station owners. Joel worked at Eaton's in Spencer, Ia. for 10 years, retiring at the age of 62.

Joel passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Ia., at the age of 77.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Delores Eaton; and an infant great-granddaughter, Madison Schnetzer.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene of Ruthven; his children: Allen and Tami Eaton of Ruthven, Greg Eaton and his friend, Elizabeth of Denver, Colo., Sheryl Parks of Ames, Michael Eaton of St. Paul, Minn., Doug and Tammy Schnetzer of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Debbie and Greg Peterson of Ruthven, and Diane Baker and her friend, Jeff of Ruthven; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roger and Eileen Eaton of Shiloh,Ill.
