Rev. Dr. John Albert Gran, Sr., 65, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 10:12 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, while in the company of family members at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas.

John was born in Spirit Lake, on Sept. 9, 1946, the son of Albert Edward and Doris Evelyn (Reining) Gran.

John attended the Sioux Rapids grade school and graduated from Sioux Rapids High School, Sioux Rapids in 1964. He attended Iowa Lakes Community College of Spencer, Culver-Stockton College, Canton Mo., and Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, Ken., where he received his Master of Divinity and his Doctorate of Ministry.

John was a member of First Christian Church McPherson, Kansas where he served his church through the years in many capacities.

John was in the Air National Guard and was activated in 1968 into the U.S. Air Force where he honorably served as a Sgt in the Vietnam War. He received the following awards, NDSM, VSM, AFGCH, 900-3.

John worked for Ranco Fertilizer Company in Sioux Rapids, and worked for Morton Buildings in Spencer. for 18 years. He received his call to ministry in 1983 and pastored churches in Cleghorn, LaBelle, Mo., Mill Creek, Kent., Chariton, Hopewell, Va., Borger, Texas, and McPherson, Kansas.

John was a member of the American Legion Post 24 McPherson where he served as Chaplin and served as Commander of the American Legion Post 1, Spencer; Bethany Group of the High Plains area of Southwest Region of the Christian (Disciples of Christ); served as the first chairman of the Spiritual Formation Priority Committee; served as moderator of the Central District in Kansas for the Christian Church (DOC); served on the Committee for Commission Ministry in the Kansas Region of the Christian Church; and served on the McPherson Ministerial Alliance.

John was united in marriage to Connie Connor-Scharnberg, on Dec. 4, 1967. To this union were born three sons, John Jr., Jerry, and Jamie. John was later united in marriage to Naomi Jean "Jeanie" Morton-Wilson on July 7, 1979, at First Christian Church, Spencer, and this union gained two more sons, Mark and Brian Wilson. They established their first home together in Spencer. Through the years they lived in several areas prior to moving to McPherson, Kansas in September of 2002.

Surviving family member include: his wife of over 32 years, Jeanie Gran of McPherson, Kansas; his children: Jerry (Gran) Scharnberg and his friend, Tracy of Sioux Rapids, Mark Wilson and his wife, Paula of May's Lick, Kent., Brian Wilson and his wife, Cherri of Plainfield, Ind.; his brother, Bill Gran and his wife, Carol of Muscatine; his grandchildren: Dustin Scharnberg, Logan Scharnberg, Anthony Moon, Bethany Wilson, Ashleigh Wilson, Jonathon Wilson, Tabitha Bowles, Christopher Wright, Kayla Wright, Austin Scharnberg and Kara Scharnberg; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two sons; an infant son, John A. Jr.; and Jamie Rae; a sister, Lois Campbell.

Friends are invited to call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, with family present from 6-8 p.m. at First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas.

The funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, with Rev. Ken Marston and Rev. Lynn Scott officiating. Military honors will be presented by members of the American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 both of McPherson.
