Funeral services for Mr. Earnest Gus Freeburg, 68, of Spencer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Spencer. Rev. Matthew Winslow will officiate the service.
Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Military services by Glen Pederson American Legion Post No. 1 of Spencer Interment will take place at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer. Military services will be conducted by the American Legion - Glen Pedersen Post 1 of Spencer.
Mr. Freeburg passed away Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at his residence in Spencer following a long illness.
Gus Freeburg, the son of Gus Junior and Florence (Tuttle) Freeburg, was born May 10, 1943, in Spencer. His childhood years were spent in Spencer, where he received his early education. His family moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., when he was 14 years old, where he received his G.E.D. Gus entered the military and served his country with the U.S. Army from 1960, until his honorable discharge in 1963. Following his discharge, he worked as a civilian at Peterson Field from 1963 until 1974. During this time, he also continued his education at El Paso Community College, where he received his AA degree in accounting.
Gus married Marjorie Hurd on June 10, 1967, in Colorado Springs, Colo. After working at Peterson Field, he began working for the Army Corps of Engineers from 1974 until 1982 in Omaha. They then moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where he continued in accounting for the Army Corps of Engineers until his retirement in 1998. They moved back to Spencer in 2002. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer, where he worked as a church volunteer. Gus also loved to fish, play golf, played softball into his late fifties and remained very active.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marjorie of Spencer; two children: David Freeburg of Spencer and Mark and his wife, Nicole of Omaha, Neb.; three granddaughters: Caela, Ashley and Abbey Freeburg, all of Omaha, Neb.; his mother, Florence Freeburg of Spencer; two sisters: Vickie Freeburg of Bremen, Ga. and Valarie and her husband, Buddy Newby of Citra, Fla.; other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund to be given to First Baptist Church of Spencer.
Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
