Shirley Jean Mills, the daughter of William and Dorothea Lane Etherington, was born June 27, 1939, in Algona, Ia. Her childhood years were spent in the Algona area where she graduated from Algona High School.
Shirley married Robert Mills Jan. 31, 1979, in Greenville, Ia. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and bowling, but her biggest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved puppies and was happy to take stray dogs into her home. Shirley was also a member of the Eagle's.
Shirley passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Ia., at the age of 72.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Jonathan Nixon; and special friend, Ella Peterson.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert, of Hartley, Ia.; seven children: Dorothea (Richard) Eldridge of Nashua, N.H., Shyla Colburn of Des Moines, Ia., John (Carmie) Miller of Dickens, Ia., Leala (David) Cain Greenbrier, Ark., Rebecca (Mark) Nixon of Spencer, Ia., Monica Healy of Eldon, Mo., and Shelly (Jim) Lorenzen of Spencer, Ia.; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; three sisters: Karen Etherington of Spencer, Ia., Patricia Prom of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lucille Luchsinger of Wautoma, Wis.; other relatives and many friends.
A family memorial gathering will take place 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at the Dickens Community Center. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Joe Etherington, Rhonda Biekert, Ray Peterson, Reynold Peterson, Jeff Mills and Billy Mills.
