Funeral services for Charles Gaylord Lewis will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. Rev. John Davenport will officiate the service.

Interment will take place in Silver Lake Cemetery in Ayrshire.

Charles Gaylord Lewis, son of Charles and Hallie (Wood) Lewis, was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Clay County. He received his education in Ayrshire graduating from Silver Lake Consolidated School in 1949.

Charles served in the United States Air Force, during the Korean Conflict, from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1955. On Aug. 1, 1953, Charles was united in marriage to Joanne Mortenson in Jackson, Minn. To this union four children were born. Charles farmed for several years and did carpentry work. He then went to work for Clay County Road Commission, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. Joanne passed away in 1977.

Charles was later married to Marion Lindsey on Dec. 17, 1988, at the Curlew Baptist Church. Charles was a devoted member of the Victory Baptist Church in Spencer.

Charles passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at the age of 79.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one sister, Norma Hanson; and one step-daughter, Debbie Nissen.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, of Dickens; his children: David and Peg Lewis, of Cylinder, Edward Lewis, of Marshalltown, Randy and Cara Lewis, of Emmetsburg, Janna Sembach, of Spencer, Ronald and Ruth Lindsey, of Chesterfield, S.C., and Kevin and Naia Lindsey of Atlantic; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
