Joseph A. Hoffman
Mass of Christian burial for Joseph A. Hoffman, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. Rev. Clem Currans will officiate the service.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. with a Parish Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Ruthven.
Joseph A. Hoffman, son of Joseph W. and Mary (Hackfort) Hoffman, was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Carroll County, Ia. He received his education at Holy Angels School in Roselle, Ia.
Joe served in the United States Air Force during World War II, from December 1941 until his honorable discharge in February 1946.
After returning to Iowa, Joe farmed near Estherville and then near Glidden, where he met Dorothy Sievers, who would become his wife, on July 20, 1949. Joe and Dorothy were married in Lidderdale, Ia. In 1951 they moved to their farm south of Ruthven. To this union eight children were born.
Joe and Dorothy retired and moved into Ruthven in 2001 where they have made their home until three years ago, when they moved to the Ruthven Community Care Center.
Joe was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven and was a member of the Ruthven American Legion Post No. 33. Joe dedicated his life to farming and caring for the land.
Joe passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at the Ruthven Community Care Center at the age of 90.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary; infant daughter, Ann Marie and Judy; brothers: Norbert in infancy, Louis, Albert, Leonard, Msg. Lawrence, Andrew, John and Norbert; a sister, Mary Ann Handlos; and a grandson, Brian Hoffman.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Ruthven, Ia.; his children: Jim and Julie Hoffman of Weston, Mo., Don Hoffman of Dickens, Ia., Marie and Glenn Stover of Greenville, Ia., Kathy and Paul Weber of Sioux City, Ia., Joe and Janelle Hoffman of Ruthven, Ia. and Terri and Jeff Sundall of Ruthven, Ia.; grandchildren and great granddaughter: Greg and Audrey Hoffman and their daughter, Posey, Kristi Hoffman, Michael and Angela Hoffman and Brian Hoffman in spirit, Smokey Joe Stover, Maureen Weber, Richard Weber and Emily Weber, Ryan Hoffman, Paige Hoffman and Carrie Hoffman, Amy Sudnall, Michael Sundall and Eric Sundall; a brother and sister-in-law, Lambert and Marge Hoffman of Graettinger, Ia; sisters-in-law, Rosie Hoffman of Graettinger, Ia., Arlene Eischeid of Carroll, Ia. and Millie Hoffman of Carroll, Ia.; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
