Phil Hurst has worked to achieve "the perfect lineup" since becoming Clay County Fair's manager in October 1999. According to grandstand ticket sales to date, he may be real close to it in 2011.
"There is no doubt about it, I think we're considerably ahead of any other year that we've had in terms of our sales," Hurst said. "Two of the shows, Big Time Rush and Alan Jackson, are both going to do extremely well for us. There's a good chance of being pretty well sold out by the fair's second weekend in particular. Plus, the Huey Lewis (and The News concert scheduled for Sept. 10). We have a real chance this year on every show."
Sellout or near-sellout performances aren't unusual for the Clay County venue.
Country crooner Kenny Rogers sold out in 2000. Martina McBride's performance in 2001 came close.
Sell-out capacity used to be 6,300, the addition of a stage-front standing area has bumped that number to 7,300.
When 2011 tickets began selling at 5 p.m. June 22, Hurst watched online sales top $1,000 a minute.
"So we knew that we were hitting very well on it," he said.
"We actually will sell more tickets to the Alan Jackson show than probably any one show we've had here," Hurst predicted. "But, overall, ticket sales are going very well this year."
The cost for adults to get into a Sept. 10-18 Clay County Fair grandstand performance ranges from no charge on Monday, Sept. 12, when The Dweebs perform, to $15 for general admission into the Wednesday, Sept. 14 Elite National Truck and Tractor Pull or $45 for general admission, front-stage standing to the Sunday, Sept. 18 Alan Jackson concert with Craig Campbell.
With tickets still available for every show, Hurst recommends interested parties either purchase tickets online, call orders in directly or visit the grandstand ticket office.
"The problem with an online ticket order at this time is it needs to be mailed to you," Hurst said. "So, the best way to do it is just to either stop out at the ticket office or give a call to our phone, 262-4740, to order tickets."
The ticket office, located at the grandstand on the fairgrounds, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, and Sundays 1 to 4 p.m.
