Mary Ellen (Walsh) Fisher was born in Estherville, Ia., on April 26, 1934. She spent most of her childhood as a farm daughter north of Spirit Lake, Ia. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walsh. She was part of a family of four girls and extended family of 15 aunts and uncles including numerous cousins.
Mary was married to Marlo Fisher on June 26, 1950. They had four children: Cherry (Hansen), Tom, Chuck and Terry. Most of Mary's life as a young wife and mother was spent at home. Her family was the center of Mary's life. She cooked, cleaned and raised her children while finding time to enjoy sewing, crafts and reading. As her children entered school, Mary did odd jobs in Spencer to help financially with living expenses. In 1974, Mary returned to school and graduated with a general education high school diploma. She entered the work force working at J.C. Penny's and eventually promoted to Catalog supervisor until her retirement in 1983.
Mary and Marlo enjoyed their retirement years in Spencer. They were active community volunteers, Bingo players, grandparent braggers and familiar Spencer faces. Mary gained the love of people and conversation from her life partner, Marlo. The last years Mary continued her fight against rheumatoid arthritis and disability that controlled her living independence. She became a resident of Touchstone Living Center, Sioux City, Ia., in 2010. She remained active by playing cards, playing and winning Bingo, creating some arts and crafts, meeting new friends to visit and staff to give a hard time.
She was given a peaceful and painless journey to begin. She will be missed by many of us until we are together again.
