Joan Jorgenson was born on May 23, 1938, in Estelline, S.D. to Monroe and Edla Jorgenson. She attended school in Hayti, S.D. and graduated from Hayti High School in 1956 as Valedictorian. She then continued her education and graduated from SDSU in Brookings, S.D.
She married Dale Jacobsen on June 8, 1957, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Norden, S.D. Joan taught school in Florence, S.D., Harford County, Md., Lake Norden, S.D., Hayti, S.D., Hull, Ia. and George, Ia.
Joan died on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, S.D. at the age of 73 years.
Joan was a member of the Hayti Lutheran Church. She was a member and leader in 4-H for 25 years. She was the chairperson for the AEA No. 4 Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers for over 25 years, served on the George Good Samaritan Center's Advisory Board, member of the Red Hat Society, taught Sunday School and wrote a column for local paper while living in George, Ia. She enjoyed family get-togethers, her children's and grandchildren's activities, writing, public speaking and family history.
She is survived by a brother, Don Jorgensen, of Clear Lake, S.D.; a sister, Arvilla (Bob) Schaeffer, of Watertown, S.D.; a daughter, Debra (Bruce) Wadsworth of Hayti, S.D.; three sons: Brian (Julie) Jacobsen of Hayti, Dean (Marla) Jacobsen of Spencer, Ia., and Brett (Laurinda) Jacobsen of Lake Poinsett; 10 grandchildren: Travis (Michelle) Wadsworth, Tara (Matt) Abraham, Mindy (Dave) Martz, Brooks (Katie) Jacobsen, Bart Jacobsen, Barry Jacobsen, Derek Jacobsen, Marni Jacobsen, Jessica Jacobsen, Jennifer Jacobsen; four step-grandchildren: Nicole (Gregg) Olawsky, Megan (Josh) Kaufman, Danae Van Roekel, and Alex Van Roekel; 10 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her parents; three sisters; a brother; and a grandson, Brett Michael Jacobsen.
