Services for Russell Edwin Olson, 99, of Spencer, formerly of the Ayrshire area, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. C. Peter Maisenbach will officiate the service.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services at the church.
Interment will take place at Silver Lake Cemetery in Ayrshire at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Military services will be conducted by Ayrshire American Legion Post 173.
Russell Edwin Olson, the son of Swan Peter and Amanda (Wigert) Olson, was born Nov. 20, 1911 in Ayrshire, Ia. His childhood years were spent in the Ayrshire, Ia. area, where he received his education in country schools. Following his schooling, he began farming near Ruthven. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 until his honorable discharge in January of 1946.
Russell married Mabel Arlene Swanson on Feb. 27, 1947, in Emmetsburg, IA. Following his marriage, he farmed in the Ayrshire area, until 1975, when he retired and moved to Estherville, Ia. In 2003, he moved to Spencer, Ia. He enjoyed playing golf and played his last game at the age of 91. Russell especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren's sporting events.
He passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, on Sunday, July 10, 2011, at the age of 99 years, 7 months and 20 days. Russell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel in 1994; and his brothers and sisters: Axel Olson, Daisy Petersen, Ellen Ricklefs, Carl Olson, Ted Olson, Mildred Olson, Anna Dyer and Harold Olson.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters: Nancy Ketelsen and her husband, John of West Bend, Ia. and Patsy Terveer and her husband, John of Brandon, S.D.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren: Chris Terveer and Genna Terveer and their children: Emma and Cade, Warren and Nikki Terveer and their children: Lake, Aftyn and Kinsley, Kent Terveer, Jacque and her husband, Nathan Gonseth and their children: Derek, Coral and Ben, Kevin and Nicole Ketelsen and their children: Tatum, Lawton and Avery, Jay & Katie Ketelsen; one sister, Florence Root of Spencer, Ia.; other relatives and friends.
