Softball: Spencer falls to Emmetsburg 5-0
The first pitch of the game was knocked out of the park by Aly Berven and Emmetsburg wouldn't look back as they beat Spencer at home Thursday night, 5-0. Spencer recorded just two hits and couldn't catch up to Faith Schmidt's fastball, striking out 12 times.
"We've got to find a way to get the bat on the ball against faster pitching and put it in play," Spencer coach Greg Jones said. "Some of that comes with age but we battled to the end."
Karis Rhode and Alexa Allen each singled for Spencer's two hits. Amy McLaury pitched seven innings, gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk. She struck out four in the loss.
Spencer's defense got out of a couple jams in the fourth and fifth innings. With the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, McLaury got a strike out and two infield outs to strand all three runners. In the fifth, Allen made a leaping catch at short and doubled off an Emmetsburg runner to end the inning.
"Our defense made some nice plays to keep us in the game," Jones said. "We've done a good job of keeping a positive attitude and feel we can play with these teams at the top of the conference."
Emmetsburg leads the Lakes Conference softball standings with an 8-1 record, 16-4 overall. Spencer falls to 3-5 in conference play and 7-14 overall.
After the leadoff home run and another run in the second, Emmetsburg took control of the game with a three-run homer by Miranda Vlasman in the bottom of the third. Schmidt threw a complete game, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out 12.
