Robert, the only son of Thaddus L. Cummings and Josephine Squire Cummings of Spencer, Ia. has passed away in Arcadia, Calif. He and his wife, Betty, have lived in Arcadia for 47 years and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in June 2010. Bob died of complications following a hip replacement surgery and Parkinson's disease.
Robert is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Roberta Cummings; his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kelly Cummings; daughter-in-law, Kathy Cummings Rimer, wife of their oldest son, Ted, who died in 1988; and his grandchildren: Kimberly and Casey Cummings and Calvin Paul. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sarah Jones of Marshall, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews
Robert served in World War II with Army Signal Operations, 529 Company, and was in the first invasion of Okinawa in 1945, and he was later moved to Korea. After the war Bob returned to college at Iowa State University and graduated with a BA degree in General Engineering.
Bob enjoyed a long and successful career as an engineer, both in sales and management. He retired at age 67, and again took up his music and played in three bands, played golf, was active in the Senior Citizen Center, and enjoyed life. He was active in youth baseball leagues, and followed his son, Ron, in his baseball career in college and for the Oakland A's. Casey, his grandson, is now in little league and his dad, Ron, is coaching.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2011, at the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia, Calif. Interment was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif. Care entrusted to the Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home in Monrovia, Calif. (626-358-3244).
