Thursday, September 23, 2010

Funeral services for Richard Harmon, 60, of Spencer will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. Rev. Lon Lewis will officiate the service.

Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

Mr. Harmon passed away Friday, Sept. 3, at his home.

Richard Alan Harmon, the son of Richard and Estella (McMannus), was born on Sept. 28, 1949, in Estherville, Iowa. His childhood years were mostly spent in Spirit Lake until the family moved to Sioux City where he completed his education and graduated from Central High School. After high school, he entered into the military, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He enlisted on Feb. 26, 1969, and he was honorably discharged on Feb. 28, 1973.

When Richard's military service ended he came back to the states and attended several colleges. Richard made his career in computer programming. He worked in New York on Wall Street, Los Angeles and Sioux Falls at CitiBank. He also lived in Sioux City before moving to Spencer in 2005, due to poor health.

Richard enjoyed riding his motorcycle, especially down the Los Angeles freeways. He also loved computer programming even when it wasn't for work, he always had projects on the side. He enjoyed going to libraries and reading and visiting with people.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Richard and Estella Harmon of Spirit Lake; his three sisters: Elizabeth McCarthy of Spirit Lake, and Darcel Boyok and Denice LeVay - both of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
