Spencer to celebrate homecoming next week

Thursday, September 16, 2010

It will be a worldly view as Spencer students and residents put their spin on the "Around the World" theme during this year's homecoming celebrations, which officially begins Monday, Sept. 20, and lasts through Saturday, Sept. 25.

School-sponsored activities during the 2010 homecoming week include theme days in each of the school buildings, sports activities, the annual homecoming coronation and next Friday's 7 p.m. football game against Storm Lake.

A 7 p.m. homecoming coronation will be on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Spencer High School Fieldhouse. SHS student Erin Krei will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Five senior girls -- Chloe Brockhus, daughter of Ross and Beth Brockshus, Nicole Kramer, daughter of Todd and Jill Kramer, Erin McDermott, daughter of Jim and Kris McDermott, Julia Olson, daughter of Mark and Brenda Olson, Haley Wilson, daughter of Brian and Shelly Wilson -- are vying for the honor of being crowned homecoming queen. King candidates are Colin Eagan, son of Tim and Dianne Eagan, Jake Hinrichsen, son of Tom and Vonnie Hinrichsen, BJ Kardell, son of Bruce and Gwen Kardell, Morgan Kramer, son of Scott and Cindy Kramer, and Robbie Schlaeger, son of Bob and Lori Schlaeger.

A free movie for all high school students, sponsored by Positively Spencer Youth, will be Wednesday night. The 7 p.m. showing of "Despicable Me" will take place at Southpark 7 Theatres. Although SHS is not sponsoring this as an official homecoming-related school event, the school does endorse it.

Activities by the "Midnight Marauders" group, which has included SHS senior females who've signed up to participate in nighttime activities such as toilet papering approved senior football players' houses, are scheduled to occur Thursday night. This non-school sponsored activity has continued with guidance from the Spencer Police Department.

In other 2010 Spencer homecoming-related activities, the Friday of homecoming week will be packed with an afternoon of events at the high school. A talent show, pep rally and tug-of-war will be held from 1:30 -- 3:25 p.m. in the fieldhouse. The Tigers will take on the Storm Lake Tornadoes that night on the football field.
