Vernon Lee Ensley Jr.
Vernon Lee Ensley, Jr. was born Sept. 25, 1932, at Glidden, Iowa, the son of Vernon Ensley, Sr. and Hazel (Smith) Ensley. The Ensley's moved to Emmetsburg when Vern was an infant, and he attended Emmetsburg Community Schools. After his education, Vern enlisted in the United States Army serving from April 1953 to March 1955. He attained the rank of Corporal and earned the National Defense, Army Occupational and Good Conduct Medals while serving in Germany.
Vern was united in marriage to Carol Fuller in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple lived in Dickens before moving to Emmetsburg eight years ago. Vern drove semi-tractors for many years. He was of the old school truck drivers. Vern drove for Smith Truck Lines, Firkins, Swanson and Bud Lorenzen before purchasing his own truck. He loved trucking and going out west. An accident forced early retirement, but he always managed to keep busy doing yardwork, gardening and fishing. Vern loved to go to E-hawk football games, and he was an avid Green Bay Packer and Dale Earnhardt fan.
On Tuesday, June 22, 2010, Vern passed away at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. He was 77.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol of Emmetsburg; four children: Julie King of Wallingford, Billy Moore of Emmetsburg, Diana Ayers and husband, Rich of Emmetsburg, and Joe Ensley and wife, Val of Spencer; seven grandchildren; and his sister, Jeri Pallow of Sauk Centre, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Danny Moore; son-in-law, Tim King; and his cousin, Roger Ensley.
