Kirk Michael Struthers was born Nov. 2, 1943, on a farm in Kossuth County, Iowa. He is the youngest of four boys born to Dale and Sadie Struthers. Kirk grew up on the family farm near Wesley and graduated from Titonka High School in 1962.

Kirk's passion for cars led him to attend a mechanics school in Omaha, Neb., following high school graduation. He later worked for Dau's Garage in Algona where he had the opportunity to meet the love of his life, Jan. Kirk married Janice Ringsdorf, on July 10, 1965, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. Kirk was a loving and devoted father to two children, Angela (Angi) and Todd. He was proud to serve with the U.S. Army National Guard. Kirk worked briefly for Algona Publishing, several years for Kossuth Mutual Insurance, Farm and Home Insurance & Realty, and was a branch manager of the Security State Bank in LuVerne, Iowa. He enjoyed talking and joking with his customers and fellow employees. In his spare time, Kirk collected completely original parts to build/restore his 1957 Chevy. He loved convertibles, and continued to own different makes and models of cars throughout the years, often entering his cars in shows and driving them in parades. His two favorites were his red and white Corvettes.

Besides cars, Kirk enjoyed motorcycles, boating and water skiing with his family in Okoboji, playing cards with friends and family, golfing, sports, and attending his children and grandchildren's activities. His love, generous spirit, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by family, friends, customers, and acquaintances. Kirk was a member of Doan Methodist Church near Titonka, First United Methodist Church of Algona, River Road Golf Club, Toastmasters, Morwen Kiwanis, Algona Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, and Iowa Board of Realtors. Years of volunteer work for Algona Band Day led to the honor of being the parade's grand marshal along with his wife, Jan, in 2000.

Kirk and Jan were both diagnosed with cancer on the same day in May 2008. Jan passed away days later (5/18/08), and Kirk continued his courageous battle with multiple myeloma with several setbacks for two years. Kirk passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, the same date that Jan died. He was surrounded by the love and support of his family and close friends during his last few days.

Kirk is survived by his daughter, Angi Bernhard and husband, Jerry of Mason City; son, Todd Struthers and wife, Tammy, of Omaha, Neb.; grandsons: Tanner and Tristan Bernhard of Mason City, and Cade Struthers of Omaha; granddaughter, Paige Struthers of Omaha; and his brothers: Lee and Marj Struthers, Spirit Lake, and Lynn and Barbara Struthers, Foley, Ala.
