Mary Martha Lyon, 98, died May 4, 2010, at Longhouse Nursing Home in Spencer. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Mary was born on a farm near Packwood, Iowa, Sept. 30, 1911, the only child of John and Anna (Hildebrand) Clark. Mary lived with her parents in Henry and Jefferson counties. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1929 and then attended Cedar Falls College and graduated in 1931 to become a teacher.
On Oct. 27, 1929, while attending teacher's college, Mary was baptized and joined the Methodist Church of Cedar Falls. Mary spent the next six years teaching school in Jefferson, Van Buren, Henry and Palo Alto counties. Mary later returned to the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls) to renew her teaching credentials. She then taught at Rolfe, Iowa, from 1965 to 1976.
She married Vern Floyd Lyon on May 26, 1937, in Mallard. On June 1, 1941, she gave birth to a son, Vern John (Vern Jr.). She was married to her husband for 38 years before his death May 24, 1975. During her life, Mary lived in the Curlew area for 30 years, and also in the Plover and Rolfe area.
Survivors include her son, Vern John Lyon, of Spencer; grandchildren: John Vern Lyon and his wife Dawn, of Spencer, Lauri Lea Myers and her husband Brian, of Greenwood, Ark., and Jay Harold Lyon of Olathe, Kansas; great-grandchildren: William Joe Blake, Michael Blake and Geena Blake, all of Ruthven.
