Funeral services for Mr. Raymond Koehnk, 89, of Everly, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly. Pastor Lauren Ley will officiate the service.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial service.

Mr. Koehnk passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Spencer Hospital.

Raymond Wilbur Koehnk, the son of Otto and Anna Koehnk, was born on Oct. 12, 1920, on a farm near Moneta, Iowa. After graduating from Everly High School in 1939, he attended the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the 1942 Iowa Big Ten championship baseball team.

In August of 1943, he was married to Alvena Winterboer and had two children, Susan and Scott.

Ray was especially proud to have been a member of Everly's 1939 state baseball championship team. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Ray served the community as a member of the Everly School Board and the Lions Club. After farming for many years he entered the crop insurance business and enjoyed being able to spend his entire life so close to agriculture and his hometown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Ann; sisters: Jeannine, Wilma and Hilda; and brothers: Otto, Walt and Melvin.

Left to cherish his memory, are his wife, Alvena, of Everly; children: Susan Decker of Asheville, N.C., and Scott Koehnk and his wife, Diane, of Key Biscayne, Fla.; grandchildren: Travis Decker of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Anna and Mary Koehnk of Key Biscayne, Fla.; and a sister, Betty (Curt) Runkle of Spencer.

Warner Funeral Home in Everly is in charge of arrangements.
