Funeral services for Mr. Gerrit "Bob" Porter, 92, of Spencer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 19, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rev. Chuck Kellogg will officiate the service.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Lunch will be served following the services at the church.

Mr. Porter passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Gerrit "Bob" Porter of Spencer Ia. was born Aug. 10, 1917, near Brunsville, Ia. He was the son of Peter and Frederika (TenVelde) Porter. They moved to a farm east of Hospers when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Archer High School in 1936 and attended Iowa State University. In 1939, he got his private pilot's license. He enjoyed private aviation all of his life and used his plane for both business and pleasure.

Bob married Betty Lieb on Sept. 23, 1940. They had four sons and they continued to live on his family farm for 41 years, retiring in 1982. He had leadership roles in many community activities including 4-H, school board, Floyd Valley Watershed Board, church board, the Citizen State Bank of Sheldon Board of Directors and West Okoboji City Council. In addition to farming and feeding cattle, Bob was a salesman for AgChem of Jackson, Minn. for 11 years. He made friends easily because he loved to visit with everyone and would readily help whenever there was a need. He also enjoyed working in his large shop.

Bob is survived by Betty, his wife of nearly 70 years; his sons: David (Betty) of Edmonds, Wash., Robert (Barbara) of Milford, Ia., and Randal (Linda) of Hospers, Ia.; five grandchildren: Michael (Dawn) Porter, Issaquah, Wash., Dan (Lisa) Porter, Mukilteo Wash., Angela (Mat) Riggle, Duvall, Wash., Paul (Katie) Porter, Huxley, Ia., and Holly (fiancÚ, Seth Still), Eden Prairie, Minn.; five great-grandchildren: Kara and Ryan Porter, Issaquah, Wash., Samantha and Jacob Porter, Mukilteo Wash., and Chloe Riggle, Duvall, Wash.; his sister, Leona Sauer, Sheldon, Ia.; and his sister-in-law, Kassy (Paul) Mosely, Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his son, Duane at age 6; his parents; his sister, Lucretia Bilsland; and his brothers-in-law: Herbert Bilsland, Jerry Rebensdorf and Richard Sauer.
