Funeral services for Mr. Robert W. Wakefield, 89, of Spencer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 5, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Rev. Dale Hodges will officiate the service.

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Masonic services will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Warner Funeral Home. A military flag presentation will take place following the services Friday at Warner Funeral Home.

Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Mr. Wakefield passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Robert William Wakefield, the son of Bryan and Margaret (Kail) Wakefield was born March 18, 1920, in Moline, Ill. He attended several grade schools before graduating from High School in East Des Moines. After graduation he worked for Iowa Power and Light before being the first in Iowa to be drafted into WWII, where he served as a mapmaker and forward observer. After his honorable discharge he attended University of Iowa for two years.

Robert worked as a registered land surveyor and was an assistant to the Clay County engineer. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, watching trains, and especially enjoyed looking at maps.

Robert married Barbara Sieh on July 2, 1949, in Okoboji and has lived in Spencer ever since. From this union there were three sons, John, Charlie and Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Barbara.

Left to cherish his memory are his three sons: John and his wife, Denna Wakefield of Borger, Texas, Charlie and his wife, Janalee Wakefield of Minneapolis, Minn., and Thomas and his wife, Laura Wakefield of Spence; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Bette Block of Naples, Fla.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
