Funeral services for Mr. James Christensen, 95, of Royal, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Rev. Deb Mechler will officiate the service.

Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Mr. Christensen passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Ruthven Care Center in Ruthven.

James Bang Christensen, the son of Peter Albert and Mary Christine Bang Christensen, was born Nov. 14, 1914. Jake, as his siblings referred to him, spent his early years growing up south of Royal on the family farm with his sister and three brothers and attended the Willow Creek Country School. He was confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal on March 24, 1929. Jim graduated from Royal High School.

Jim married Clara Iona Steffen on May 2, 1936, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Royal. They continued to live in the Royal community on a farm east of Royal until they retired from farming in 1977 and moved to Spencer. Jim loved airplanes. In the 1930s he and his brother Harvey built one- and two-seat monoplanes and taught themselves to fly. In later years he continued to build radio-controlled model airplanes and flew them in competitions in the area.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mabel Percival; and three brothers: Harvey, Francis and Milton.

He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Russell Morey of Macomb, Ill.; one son, James William and his wife, Tami Christensen of Spencer; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; Russell and Becky Morey, Christian and Joshua of Mt Pleasant, Iowa, Doug and Heather Morey of Kingwood, Texas, Lindsey and Jason Eckrich, Wade and Emaline of Riverside, Iowa, Lucas Christensen of Yokota Airbase Japan, and Weston Christensen of Spencer; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Peterson of Newbury Park, Calif. and Amanda Steffen of Spencer; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
