Three area teams land first-round home games

DES MOINES -- The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its Class 1A and Class 2A pairings for the boys postseason basketball tournament Wednesday.

Three area teams landed home games by virtue of the seeding process, which pairs district teams based on each team's record from games 5-15 of the regular season. The top four seeds in each district earn first-round home games.

Sioux Central draws a first-round home game in Class 2A District 4 against Carroll Kuemper. In Class 1A District 2, Clay Central-Everly will host Alta, and in 1A district 3, Ruthven-Ayshire will host the winner of a play-in game between Newell-Fonda and West Bend-Mallard.

Play-in games in both classes will be played on Monday, Feb. 15. In Class 2A, bracket with play-in games will begin their district tournament on Thursday, Feb. 18; brackets without a play-in game will begin on the 15th. First-round games in Class 1A will be played on Thursday, Feb. 18. All games start at 7 p.m.

District Tournament brackets in Classes 3A and 4A are expected to be released early next week.

Sioux Central would play either Manson-Northwest Webster or Prairie Valley in the district semifinals. Eagle Grove plays Clarion-Goldfield and Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer will host Fort Dodge St. Edmond in first-round matchups in the top half of the bracket. The district final will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Humboldt.

Okoboji will travel to Garner-Hayfield for a first-round pairing in District 3. The Pioneers would play either West Hancock or Belmond-Klemme in the district semifinals. The District 3 and 4 winners will play in a substate matchup on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Fort Dodge.

Clay Central-Everly would take on the winner of No. 5 Storm Lake St. Mary's and Alta, then faces a district final date in Cherokee against one of five teams -- Boyden-Hull, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, Granville Spalding, Harris-Lake Park and George-Little Rock.

Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Granville Spalding will face off in a play-in game to determine who plays at Boyden-Hull on the 18th.

Districts 1 and 2 in Class 1A will meet up in a substate game played on Saturday, Feb. 27, and hosted by the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. The District 1 bracket includes Remsen St. Mary's or Akron-Westfield taking on No. 1 Rock Valley, Le Mars Gehlen taking on Remsen-Union, River Valley taking on Whiting and Woodbury Central hosting Kinglsey-Pierson in first-round games.

The District 3 lineup in 1A is largely made up of Cornbelt Conference teams. Ruthven-Ayrshire would play either Graettinger-Terril or Laurens-Marathon in the district semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Algona Garrigan and Twin River Valley square off in the first round in the bottom half of the bracket, as do North Sentral Kossuth and Armstrong-Ringsted. The district final will be played in Emmetsburg.

Winners from districts 3 and 4 will play in a substate game in Algona. District 4 includes Northeast Hamilton, Cal (Latimer), Corwith-Wesley-Luverne, Mason City Newman, Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka, North Iowa and Northwood Kensett.
