Services for Mrs. Sylvia Holmberg-VanNorman, 83, of Spencer, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at First Congregational Church in Spencer. Rev. Wendy VanTassell will officiate the service.

Interment will take place in North Lawn Cemetery in Spencer.

Mrs. Van Norman passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Spencer Hospital.

Sylvia Pearle Holmberg-Van Norman, the daughter of Daniel Christian and Lola I. (Moore) Van Hoven, was born May 20, 1926, in Dickens, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Dickens, where she received her education, graduating from Dickens High School in 1943.

Sylvia married Raymond Dean Holmberg on March 20, 1949, at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Following their marriage, they farmed in the communities of Harris, Ruthven and Spencer for many years. They retired from farming in 1965. Sylvia worked part time for a credit union in Spencer, for many years, until her retirement. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer. She also was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary and the Square Dance Camper's Association.

On May 1, 2004, Sylvia married Arlan "Jack" Van Norman at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. They were blessed with over five years of happiness together.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Raymond Dean Holmberg; two brothers: Ed and Fred Van Hoven; and a brother-in-law, Milo Myers.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Arlan D. "Jack" Van Norman of Swea City, Iowa; one son and his wife, Richard and Patricia Holmberg of Emmett, Idaho; one daughter and her husband, Jeannette and Lawrence Swenson of Spencer; two sons by marriage: John and Robin Van Norman and Chuck and Joan Van Norman; four granddaughters and their husbands: Heather and Brian Benson, Erin and Shawn Johnson, Kayce and Landon Meyer and Andrea Swenson; five grandchildren by marriage and their spouses: Tina and Greg Huberg, Stephanie and Craig Fox, Jillian and Jim Krieg, Bryan Van Norman and Katrina Van Norman; nine great-grandchildren: Brennan, Landon, Aidan, Allie, Keegan and Miriam Benson, Perry and Weston Johnson and Andrew Meyer; eight great-grandchildren by marriage: Amber Leonard, Justin and Caleb Huberg and their families, Autumn and Brantley Fox, A.J., Nick and Emerson Krieg; three sister-in-laws: June Myers, Rosie Van Hoven and Elsie Van Hoven; other relatives and many friends.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
