Dewey to be featured on library's new logo

Thursday, November 19, 2009
Spencer Public Library representatives plan to capitalize on the popularity of the town's famous late cat at the start of the new year. An offer's been made, and a decision's been reached, to use a likeness of Dewey Readmore Books in the library's logo.

"We really don't have a current one now. That's part of our problem," Kay Larson, the library's director, said. "We have brochures that we hand out to people when they come to the library and get their first library card, but we have run out of those brochures. They were designed by Vicki Myron when she was the director here."

The decision to pursue a logo for new library bookmarks, handouts and brochures commenced this summer. Standard Printing & Design, which was approached and asked to design the logo, did so for a fee of $500 over the next few months.

"In the meantime, Vicki Myron offered that we could use the Dewey logo as the library's logo," Larson said. "She is currently working with her merchandisers and they are putting together what they call a styling guide, which will have the picture of Dewey that they're going to use on their merchandise, what color it's going to be, how big it is and all of those kinds of pieces of information. But, she has offered to let us use that logo that they come up with for our library brochures, advertising, signage and all of those kinds of things."

The styling guide, which is expected to be completed by the end of next month, will outline whether the kitten in the "Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library!" children's book, the older picture of the feline used in the "Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World" book, a picture or a rendering of a photograph of the cat will be used.

"I think it's a good thing that we're using Dewey as the logo because he is so much in the news right now and so many people are attuned to Spencer Library and the community of Spencer, Iowa, that I think taking advantage of this offer of Vicki's for this logo is a very good thing," Larson said.

When asked if Spencer Public Library board members will consider utilizing the other logo already designed by Standard Printing & Design, she answered, "I'm sure that sometime in the future -- long after I've retired and when we have a new board -- that some board in the future and some library director in the future may say, 'OK, it's time to get a different logo.' Businesses do change logos over the years. It's just that right now Dewey is a very hot commodity."

I remember when Dewey was found in the book drop-off and going to the library to see him. I grew up with Dewey! Now, my kids know Dewey because we bought the book. They LOVE it! I think Dewey being on the Library logo is a wonderful idea!

How hypocritical that the library banned cats forever and now wants to use one in their logo just to capitalize on his success. I'm glad Ms. Myron's generosity rises above such hypocrisy.

I love the regal poses of Dewey, like the one on the small-town cat book cover. Dewey loved the camera and attention. Rather insensitive and hypocritical to ban future library cats while promoting the wonderful one they had. His image may endure as the library logo, not just for the present. I think the library cat ban should be lifted in conjunction with the arrival of the new Dewey logo. Google library cats to see they exist around the world -- I guess those places don't worry about allergic patrons. What if Dewey had been turned away in 1988? Thanks to Vicki Myron for spreading the Dewey magic around.

Where is the hypocrisy in having a PUBLIC LIBRARY that is available to ALL the public? It is a library, not a pet center. I hope those who are allergic to cats will be as tolerant of such opinions as they were for twenty years of limited, or zero use, for them at this tax payer funded facility.

"Dewey - There's a Cat in the LIbrary" children's book by Myron is #10 on the NY Times best seller list this week. Yes.

I am allergic to cats, and I still frequented the library. Do you think everyone who has hay fever has to move out of the state? It is absolutely hypocritical to capitalize on Vicki and Dewey's success. But I am still glad for the decision. It was the right one. Two wrongs don't make a right... Foolish people in power make poor decisions all the time. Another board, another time, another cat...

From Dartford, England, I had never heard of the town of Spencer until I recently read the absolutely amazing book - Dewey. As Chief Executive Officee for the Charity 'Age Concern' I am professional and not prone to undue emotion but I was left frankly dazed in grief after finishing the book on Dewey. I was surprised on going on the Spencer Daily Reporter that there was not more headline articles on Dewey, and the vote of the Library Board to be cat free in future is very hard to understand - especially after the world wide publicity with Dewey and the proposal to have dewey on the Libraries Logo. A really amazing and wonderful cat, cared and loved by a wonderful team of staff at the Library, in a wonderful Town. Rest in Peace Dewey, I will never ever forget you.

Mr. Arnold captured the sentiment of many who have followed Dewey. Wonderful Dewey has become understated due, in part, to the resident animal ban at the library. Truly amazing are the non-thinking individuals among us.
