One Man's Perspective: A fair shake for the Sheikh

Saturday, November 14, 2009
I don't know about you but lately I've expended a great deal of energy worrying about fair treatment of terrorists.

You know, I've had many sleepless nights pondering whether or not the self-admitted mastermind behind the most hideous terrorist act ever committed on American soil would get his day in court and his chance at justice.

Well courtesy of the Obama Administration, my concerns have been allayed.

The same court system that set OJ free despite an amazing amount of blood, clothing and behavioral evidence will now be given a chance to see what it can do to skew justice for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four of his other terrorist friends.

Mohammed (not THE Mohammed, but the terrorist guy) and four others have been hauled from Guantanamo Bay to New York where they will stand trial in a civilian courthouse - complete with all the rights, procedures and attorneys searching for loopholes and get-out-of-jail free cards that money can buy.

For those who may not know, this is the same Sheikh that admitted to being responsible for the coordinated 9-11 attacks that resulted in the deaths of 3,000 people when the World Trade Center towers were brought down by two hijacked jetliners, another hijacked jet hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in the state of Pennsylvania.

Ya, that guy. The same guy we've been feeding, providing with clean clothing for and ensuring that he has undisturbed daily prayer time at Guantanamo.

And what about his buddies? A major suspect in the bombing of the USS Cole warship, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, will be tried through the military commission process.

Now there are a lot of things that these terrorist animals may be entitled to.

A one way ticket to meet Allah. Check!

Their date with 21 virgins. Check!

A dirt nap. Check!

Naked pyramids with fellow male believers...Oops, they already got that. Check!

But a fair trial in the American court system is not one of them.

The right to a high priced attorney who knows every trick in the book when it comes to finding loopholes in the legal system? No, they don't deserve that.

How about some liberal judge who gets bent out of shape at the mention of waterboarding? No, they don't deserve that.

How about endless, expensive appeals process at the cost of the taxpayers? No they don't deserve that.

The good Sheikh took great pride in admitting what he did to the infidels in the name of Allah. He struck at America where it hurts. Innocent men, women and children died that day. Lots of them. Lots of families suffered, some directly impacted, others huddled by their TVs at home, watching in horror as images filled our heads, reminding us that we're not safe within our borders any more.

The definition of a terrorist mastermind is a guy who gives orders to a bunch of Muslim extremists to fly planes into buildings, thereby making widows of their wives and leaving children fatherless, then hiding from capture. Saddam Hussein was a genius and leader of an army of warriors, remember where we found him -- that's right, cowering in a hole.

Now this particular "mastermind," who looked like he just emerged from a cave when we found him, will arrive in the American court system, no doubt well coifed and dressed to the nines - courtesy of his over-priced lawyers advice so he can put forward his best face. They will be made to look like victims. Their attorneys will do their best to convict America and its military system, rather than lay the blame at the feet of their defendants. And we will sit by and watch as our country is shredded in the court room; mocking the very court system and guaranteed freedoms that these animals have spat upon time and again.

What was our president thinking by extending our rights to these barbarians?

I quote the wife of one of the hijacked pilots on that fateful day, Debra Burlingame, who told an AP reporter, "We have a president who doesn't know we're at war. The prospect of these barbarians being turned into victims by their attorneys..."

She said it all.

This is a slap in the face to all those who died on that day, their survivors, and all those who currently serve in the war. And you should see it as a slap in your face to as an American citizen.
