John W. Bruce, 78, of Spencer, passed away on Saturday Nov. 7, 2009, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was born on Nov. 22, 1930, in Pekin, Ill., to Stewart and Aley (Whitson) Bruce. John was united in marriage to Alice Lathrop in 1951, and later divorced. He married Marla (Broyles) Orris on Feb. 2, 1979, in Elk Point, S.D.

John grew up in Pekin, Ill., and graduated from Pekin High School in 1948. He went on to further his education, graduating from Eureka College in Eureka, Ill., in 1952. While in college, John was active in the Lambda Qui Alpha Fraternity.

John dealt in sales of agriculture machinery and was a banker for ten years. In his younger years, John was in Boy Scouts and later active in Eagles, Moose and Lions Clubs. John was very passionate about his faith and his conservative values. John enjoyed golfing, and the time he spent with his family and friends, and their pets, Katy, Kash and Sam.

John is survived by his wife, Marla Bruce of Spencer; three daughters: Luann Wolfe and her husband, Mike of Albuquerque, N.M., Dianna Isder and her husband, John of Ocheydan, Iowa, and Suann Stines of Anthon, Iowa; a son, Andrew Bruce and his wife, Wanda of Sun City, Calif.; a stepson, Bradley Orris and his wife, Jennifer of Rapid City, S.D.; four stepdaughters: Sandra Strohmeier and her husband, Gregg of Minneapolis, Minn., Nancy Ketcham and her husband, Lee of Spencer, Susan Marshall and her husband, Andre of Los Angeles, Calif., and Debra Emery and her husband, Dennis of East Bethel, Minn.; a brother, James Bruce and his wife, Mildred of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice; and a stepdaughter, Karen Ash.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Spencer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in John's name.

The Schuchert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
