Tigers locked out at district swim meet

The Spencer girls swim team came up short in its bid for state qualifying times Saturday in Fort Dodge, placing as high as third in a relay and sixth in an individual event.

The regional champion from each event in all six state-wide regionals advances to the state meet. The next 16 best times in each event from across the state also qualify for state.

Mason City and Ames made sure the remaining seven teams in the 9-team field had little chance of advancing. The Mohawks and the Little Cyclones combined to place first and second in all three relays, and took the top three spots in 6 of 8 individual events.

Mason City won nine events, Ames won two. Ames sophomore Sarah Kemp also won the regional championship in diving, an event in which only four of the nine teams competed.

Ames won the team title in Fort Dodge with 502 points, 28 better than the Mohawks. Sioux City Metro was third with 261 points and Spencer was fourth with 245.

Spencer's top finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay where Melanie Harmon, Suzanne Rettey, Hannah Cacek and Ann Magnuson placed third in a time of 4:07.36. Cacek scored the Tigers' best individual finish, placing sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.95.

Spencer had 15 top-10 performances Saturday, turning in its best effort in the 100 breaststroke where Amy McLaury, Ali Meister and Kalei Roskins all placed in the top 10.

Hollee Mohni and Magnuson placed in the top 10 in four events apiece. The duo teamed up in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Mohni turned in her best individual finish in the 100 freestyle with an eighth-place effort. Magnuson placed eight in the 100 butterfly.

Rettey, Harmon and Erin Rossiter all placed in the top 10 in three events. Rettey and Rossiter each scored a pair of individual top 10s -- both finished as high as eighth.
