A large cast comprised of young Spencer thespians and a live orchestra ensemble bring the famous story of River City, Iowa to life on the old Spencer High School Auditorium stage for two more shows, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Showtimes will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee scheduled for Sunday.
The Music Man is based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey concerning a con man who poses as a boys' band organizer and leader, selling band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk with the plan to skip the town with the cash.
What Hill doesn't count on is the town's librarian seeing right through him and stealing his heart.
The play's fictional setting, 1912 River City, is based in large part on Willson's birthplace, Mason City.
The show became a hit on Broadway in 1957, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and running for 1,375 performances. The cast album won the first Grammy Award for "Best Original Cast Album," and the show's success led to a popular 1962 film and a 2003 television remake.
