The toughest sport on dirt

Bull riding returning to Events Center

The rules are simple. Place a wiry 150-pound cowboy on the back of a hulking, snorting temperamental 2,000 pound bull and see if he can ride the beast for an eternal eight seconds... with one hand strapped to the bull's massive backside. S & G Bucking Productions brings the PBR Enterprise Tour to Spencer on Nov. 20-21.

The show will be in town for two nights in November -- Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21. The touring pros of PBR will begin bucking bulls at 7:30 p.m. each night, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

The Enterprise Tour is PBR's newest competitive series and features both current and upcoming PBR Stars. All prize money won on the Enterprise Tour will count toward qualification for the Challenger Tour Finals and Built Ford Tough World Finals. The PBR professionals will be bucking 40-45 bulls each night in Spencer.

Scott Hallgren, general manager for VenuWorks at the Clay County Regional Events Center, is excited to bring the dirt back into the Events Center. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the PBR Enterprise Tour to Spencer and northwest Iowa, as this is an incredible opportunity for us to host one of the stops on the 2010 PBR tour. Our show in November marks the start of the 2010 season on the PBR Enterprise Tour. There will only be two PBR events in Iowa for the season, our stop in Spencer and next spring in Des Moines. We are truly honored PBR and S & G Bucking Productions chose Spencer as one of its stops in the upper Midwest. Bull riding is America's original EXTREME sport, and this is not your daddy's rodeo! You will see nonstop, fast-paced action with two hours of pure fun that includes rock music, country hits, indoor fireworks, 45 bucking bulls, the Wild Cow Ride, and 45 insane cowboys chasing after the prize money and points each night."

More than 1,200 bull riders from the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico hold PBR memberships. They compete in more than 300 bull riding events per year on either the elite tour, which is the Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS), the three minor league tours, which are the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour, and the Discovery Tour, or the PBR International circuits (PBR Australia, PBR Brazil, PBR Canada and PBR Mexico). The ultimate goal for PBR athletes each year is to qualify for the prestigious PBR World Finals in Las Vegas where the coveted title of PBR World Champion is decided.

Professional bull riding is a fierce, rough and grueling sport with roots deeply imbedded in American culture. It's America's original extreme sport. The PBR has evolved into a captivating and adrenaline charged sporting event that features an all-star cast of the greatest bull riders and bucking bulls in the world.

A new feature has recently been added to the Spencer show: the Wild Cow Ride. Sonny Smith, of S & G Productions, explained the new addition: "Five teams compete to saddle-up a cow and the first cow to cross the finish line with a rider on its back wins the prize."

He goes on to explain the rules, "Each night we will accept five four-person teams. The entry fee is $5 per person or $20 per team, and this goes toward the prize money. The winning team will receive $100 cash, all entry fees, and PBR T-shirts. You must be 18 years or older and wear jeans and boots to enter. Each team will need one saddle. To register, teams must call the Events Center -- the first five teams that register and pay get in the competition..."

About PBR

Headquartered in Pueblo, Colo., the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. was created in 1992 when a group of 20 visionary bull riders broke away from the traditional rodeo scene seeking mainstream attention for the sport of professional bull riding. They felt that, as the most popular event at a rodeo, bull riding deserved to be in the limelight and could easily stand alone.

Owned today by 44 cowboys, management and Spire Capital, the PBR celebrated its most successful year of existence in 2007, establishing milestones in organizational revenue, bull rider earnings, record-breaking performances, and media attention. It still relishes the title of being the fastest growing sport in the country.
