He was the only candidate for mayor to meet the deadline. Three city council members and two incumbents on the Spencer Hospital Board of Trustees also have uncontested races, barring write-in campaigns.
Ward 1 Council Member George Kruger will be on the 2009 ballot to keep his seat after a successful write-in campaign four years ago. He secured 87 write-in votes to surprise incumbent Steve Waller, who appeared to have an uncontested race four years ago.
Steve Bomgaars met the filing deadline and is on the ballot for a third term in Ward 3. Ron Hanson is seeking his second term in Ward 5 and met the filing deadline.
The only challenger to meet the filing deadline is Randy Plagman, the owner of Complete Recovery, a recycling business in Spencer. He and incumbent David Scott are seeking the city council's at-large seat. Scott has been on the council since 1981.
The two Spencer Hospital Trustees with terms set to expire are Gary Van Hofwegen and Neal Conover. They both filed to stay on the board and do not face challengers on the ballot.
The nine other cities in Clay County have until 5 p.m. Friday to get nomination papers to the Clay County Auditor's Office in Spencer. An area overview will be included in an upcoming edition of The Daily Reporter.

Hey maybe this time someone will notify the voters that we have an election!
Uh, I think they just did with this article, didn't they?
They didn't say when and where to vote.
The first line of the article says it's on Nov. 3rd. If you look at a calendar, it will say "Election Day" on that date. In the same amount of time it probably took you to write either of your comments, I was able to look up on the internet where to vote in Spencer. It's the Clay County Regional Events Center. It's one of those buildings at the fairgrounds. Would you like a ride out there on November 3rd or would that leave you with nothing to complain about?
