Do you think the Spencer Public Library should move, remodel, rebuild, or stay as is? Why?

  • Stay where they are. It is a nice building they just need to clean out the old books, restructure a bit and clean up the whole building. I would like to see someone buy the Spencer 3 theaters and continue to operate them as theaters - sort of a Mom & Pop operation.

  • Stay as it is. Clean up, sort out remodel. More isn't better in todays economy. Save the money for other purposes.

  • I feel that the library should stay where it is. It could use new carpeting. Sell of some the books that aren't checked out very often anymore. We could not move Dewy's home for all his life. It would just not be the same, going in to the library has so many memories.

  • I love the library where it is. We have a great library. I agree, build on and remodel if we need more space.

  • I hope we can save the original Spencer Theatre. Its been a part of Grand Ave for generations.

  • The saddest day for Spencer was when the old Carnegie library was demolished to make way for the new library. We can't go back and undo that but let's not make another mistake by moving Dewey's home as 5kids5kids stated.

  • I remember the old library. There are a lot of memories there. I can not understand why anyone would want to move to a building down town. The library you have in Spencer is very nice and comfitable. My wife and I enjoy going there to rest and read. It will need new carpets and a professional cleanup. That would be cheaper, and the SMARTEST thing to do. Do not move the library. Stay where it is. PLEASE. I know I live out of town, but that building is in great shape.

  • I understand that the library needs more room but I think that if they truly find the need for more room then they should look at a place like central office because it has the proper location with plenty of parking and its still within walking distance for the kids. Central office could be moved to another facility in the city. Arts on Grand could also relocate closer to the Library so that they could share programs easier and work off of the same facilities.

  • If you read last week's article about library space, it has been determined a space needs study will be done. Who knows what the result of that study will be. Maybe the current library is adequate -- let's hope so for Dewey's sake.

  • In this day of technology why would we need more space at the library? If a publication is requested it can be received within a few days by request from another library. I agree with Leah. Clean out the old books.

  • I also agree that we have a nice facility already. I would also like to see some of the older books removed. Any money not spent on a remodel or new facility could be used to purchase new books that are more current than what is currently there. That seems to be the purpose of a library - lots of books on current topics. The non-fiction section at the current library desperately needs to be updated and cleaned out. Hard to research when many of the books are out-of-date.

  • I fondly remember the Spencer library and its unique design....I agree don't move it. Clean out the old, and update the selections, spruce up the interior with new carpet, paint etc. New and better in these times isn't always better. Old and just fine will do.

  • Well it seems that at least some of the public has spoken and the assessment for more space doesn't need to be done. I think the library board needs to spend some time going thru the library and making a to do list and getting started.

  • This seems like the right thing at the wrong time. With so many in Spencer unemployed or underemployed, why not wait a year to even do the study. Let's climb out of this recession before we jump to an expensive study, remodel, or replacement. I am for this, don't get me wrong. I really am. I also understand that at least two factories (including Eatons) has a scheduled lay-off this month. Things are just not that rosy right now.
