Arlene V. Heine, 87, passed away July 5, 2009, at Hilltop Care Center, in Spirit Lake.

At her request she was cremated and graveside services will be conducted at a later date in Waterloo.

She was born Oct. 17, 1921, on a farm in Clay County near Spencer, to Emma (Gross) Maurer and Albert F. Maurer. She was the sixth of nine children. She attended Spencer schools, graduating in 1939. Upon graduation, she moved to Waterloo, where she worked for the John Deere Company for 39 years, retiring in 1982.

Arlene married Willard Swatosh in 1950. He passed away on Jan. 23, 1965. She then was united in marriage to Merle Heine in 1973. He operated a barber and beauty shop in Washburn, until he retired in 1982. He preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1993. They traveled extensively and eventually settled their winters in Arizona and summers in Waterloo. Several years after Merle passed away, Arlene moved to Heritage Landing in West Okoboji. She spent the past three years at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford.

She was preceded in death by sisters: Beatrice Ramhorst, Blanche Taylor, Josephine Stouffer, and Marylinn Taylor; and brothers: Everett Maurer and Kenneth Maurer.

Arlene is survived by two sisters: Frances Hepworth of Spencer, and Beverly Slipke of Wahpeton.
