Bringing home that hardware after three hard-fought matches in state tourney play must be incredibly satisfying to those young men, their coaches, families and friends.
I've watched, throughout so many years, as a dedicated group of individuals have grown the soccer program here in Spencer from the ground up. It took vision, dedication, more than a little capital, and a desire to bring the sport of the world to this corner of northwest Iowa.
I think the championship underlined just how far they've come.
Today, hundreds of local youth participate in programs, and the future of soccer is bright.
Bask in the success, all of you involved. It took so much hard work and dedication to get to this peak!
To the ladies squad, who fell short of their goal, forge on. You've got a great base to work from, team members dedicated to excellence, and great coaching and support. You'll achieve your dream soon as well.
Are you ready for Flagfest?
The unofficial start of the Spencer summer season kicks off this week, and I look forward all year to Flagfest.
It's an opportunity to show off our community, to get shined up and enjoy the many activities. The Spencer Chamber, committees and chairs need our thanks for pulling so many great activities together into one fantastic weekend.
Volunteers make Flagfest so great, and I can't even begin to imagine just how many are involved in all the different events.
Want a reminder of why this area is such a great place to live? Flagfest shows us.
While Mother Nature didn't cooperate, fun was still had by all who attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the Clay County Conservation Board, held Saturday at Scharnberg Park.
Dan Heissel and his crew put on quite an event, and showed off a jewel in the Clay County nature area crown. Scharnberg Park has come a long, long way over the years and is now a great place for families to gather, for a day for for a week. The camping facilities are top-notch, the new cabins are great for those not inclined to really "rough it," and there's no greater spot for an afternoon of relaxation.
Congratulations to the Clay County Conservation Board, and here's to another 50 great years!
We're going through a particularly stressful rite of passage at our house - driver's ed. I don't remember causing my own mother so much angst as I learned the rules of the road. I also don't remember her letting out audible gasps as I took the wheel.
Perhaps, being number five out of seven children numbed my mother to the inevitable starts and stops of a young driver.
So, if I seem a bit more jumpy than usual, you'll know why.
