Norman Thomsen, 95, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at St. Lukes Lutheran Nursing Home in Spencer.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove.

Interment took place at Barnes Township Cemetery.

Norman G. Thomsen was born May 29, 1914 in Spencer, the son of Thorval and Dorothea (Andersen) Thomsen. He received his education at the rural country township School.

Norman was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Spencer and later confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, where he served on the church council. Norman later joined Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove.

He entered the United States Navy in 1942 and served during World War II. While in the Navy, Norman took machinery and mechanic classes. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On July 11, 1946, Norman married Helen Cleveland at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. The couple was blessed with three children: Gene, Mary Lou and Paul.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thorval and Dorothea Thomsen; his two sisters: Verna Carlson and Mae Teisinger; and an infant brother.

Norman is survived by his wife, Helen; his children: Gene Thomsen and wife, Kathy, Mary Lou Hugen, and Paul Thomsen and wife, Sheila; his brother, Gordon Thomsen and wife, Shirley; and 11 grandchildren.

The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids was in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund in Norman's memory for the Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp.
