Events Center targets KISS for Spencer stop

General Manager Scott Hallgren, sees all the possibilities for the Clay County Regional Events Center.

He also knows its limitations. Under normal circumstances, it may be a tough sell to book mega rock band KISS in a northwest Iowa arena capable of seating 2,664.

That's where area residents can help. The band is taking "demands" as part of a contest for the first ever fan-routed North American tour. In a nutshell, fans go to a Web site, plug in Spencer's 51301 zip code and the vote will count toward a local effort to route the upcoming KISS tour to Spencer for a stop.

Voting actually began April 6 at the event-based social networking site Eventful. It continues until June 30. Spencer residents can vote through www.kissonline.com as well.

"Right there on the home page, on the very first page, there's a big box that promotes this contest," Hallgren said. "There's a big button that says 'demand it.' That big yellow button, when you click on that, it will take you to the voting process. It's very simple."

The form requests your gender and year of birth, an e-mail for the verification process and the zip code, so the vote counts toward the "demanded" city. The results will be announced in July.

Early returns have the band spending a lot of time in Canada. The Dallas metro area is the only U.S. city in the top 10 as of Monday afternoon.

Spencer has a fighting chance because the final tally will be weighted based on the city's population size. The band has said it will book as many stops as financially possible -- and stops in Minneapolis and Omaha, Neb. are in the top 30.

"Any size market across the country has an opportunity," Hallgren said.

A city also needs to meet the requirements outlined in a booking disclaimer, including payment of the band's performance fee and the ability to provide a suitable venue.

"From a national perspective, to land a show like that, would definitely put northwest Iowa on the map for many out there in the music business," Hallgren said.

The general manager recalls how support for a 2005 stop by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus opened the door for many family-oriented shows to follow. He thinks a KISS concert -- or any strong showing for Spencer in the KISS contest vote -- could have the same impact among rock promoters.

"They're looking at those markets because there are a lot of rock shows out there touring," Hallgren said. "There's a lot of rock show promoters and they need to take their business somewhere where they are going to sell tickets and be successful."

Who exactly does the booking for the Events Center? So you're telling me that the most relevant band we can ATTEMPT to get is Kiss? When exactly were they known for anything more than being Gene Simmons's old band? The answer is about 30 years ago. They booked Skillet and the Comatose tour. That was a great show. The problem lies in it's a Christian Rock Tour. There is nothing wrong with Chritian Rock, but most people stay away from it because they don't want to hear about God or Jesus in their music. It almost seems like whomever the powers that be want to make sure that whatever they decide to let in has "wholesome values" and is good for you. No offense, let us decide that for ourselves. Bring in popular acts that are relevant and people really want to hear. There are tons of them......and I guarantee KISS isn't on that list. Out of all the rock bands our right now......KISS?? It's like saying I have these great new clothes in my drawer, but....I choose to wear the lime colored bell-bottoms in the corner instead. They were cool and relevant at one time.....that time was a very long time ago. I guess my entire point comes down to this. They went to all this trouble for this Events Center...bring in things people would actually like......not Chrisitan rock that only appeals to a small minoriy, or just country music, or a rock band who has been dated for many years. Think of all the other poeple in the area also. Lastly, I think whoever books events should really be fired for lack of competance and vision, and creativity.

I would like to respond to "lastsonofoa".

I believe that the Events Center does a great job in trying to bring all types of entertainment to Spencer...from WWE Wrestling to Concerts to family entertainment to vendor shows. They face a double sided problem...the cost of many events vs the number of available seats. Many so-called "relevant" events are so expensive that they won't book here because of the size of the arena or, if they will book, ticket prices would be out of this world and the event wouldn't sell. Each year the Events Center grows the number of their events and constantly strives to bring entertainment to Northwest Iowa. The next time you want to criticize someone...have a solution or suggestion. What do you consider to be "relevant"? Just so you know...I believe "Skillet" sold over 1,000 tickets...whose to say what's relevant...thank goodness for diversity!!

I think that trying to book KISS is a great idea! Just because they are "OLD" doesn't mean that they woudn't put on a great show!

I think that the person/people booking the events are doing a great job as well!!! Bringing in WWE & TNA, Ringling Bros., ect...

If they were to book KISS, I think that the event would sell out VERY quickly!!!!!!

I, too, would like to respond to "lastsonofoa".

There is no way the Event Center can book something that will please everybody. I'm not a Christian rock fan and I found myself at the third day concert via a free ticket and mildly enjoyed it. Keep your mind and options open.

Do you realize that Kiss coming to Spencer would be a news story all over the country? It would be huge. Have you ever seen Kiss live? I've seen them twice, in the 70's and the 80's. You may think they are has-beens but if they come here do yourself a favor and go see them. You won't be sorry. We were at Sturgis when they played there last year and couldn't get within a mile of them, luckily you could still hear them that far away.

Haha....I'm not a Kiss fan by any means...but how cool would it be if they came to Spencer? GNARLY!
