'Stamp Out Hunger' drive to benefit UDMO pantry
Local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service, will be collecting food today. This marks the 15th year the nationwide "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive has helped families in need in the community.
"All you have to do is place nonperishable food items like canned meat, soups, juice, pasta or vegetables out by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9 and the carrier will pick it up. We'll bring it in, consolidate it on Monday and then deliver it to the Upper Des Moines Opportunity (food pantry) here in Spencer," Molly Sonius, Spencer's postmaster, said.
An additional cart to place nonperishable items will also be stationed in the local post office's lobby through Monday.
"This is just an excellent chance for the community to help out Upper Des Moines," Sonius said of the food drive. "And, a big thanks needs to go to the carriers for the extra work they do on this day."
